Basic Surgical Skills Course

This course has been designed to introduce surgical trainees to safe surgical practice within a controlled workshop environment. It aims to teach, assess and certify the ability of trainees to use safe and sound surgical techniques that are common to all forms of surgery.

Content

  • Open Surgery
  • Endoscopic Surgery
  • Laparoscopic Surgery

Open Surgery

  • The practice and safe operating techniques, gowning and gloving
  • Understand and handling of surgical Instruments 
  • Understand and practice of suturing techniques, 
  • Understand and practice of laying safe surgical knots 
  • Understand the principles of handing tissues and wound management 

Endoscopic Surgery

  • Introduction to endoscopic surgery 
  • Understand the differences between open and endoscopic surgery

Laparoscopic Surgery

  • Understand the principles behind the practical and safe use of laparoscopic instrumentation

Criteria

One must have a medical degree.  It is also mandatory to have an Irish Medical Council Number or equivalent. 

 

Suitability

Trainees who are starting Core Surgical Training St1 and ST2) in all of the surgical specialties. 

 

Format

  • Pre-course DVD to prepare for the course and to get the most out of the intensive two days.
  • Small group workstations to focus on basic skills and techniques
  • Hands-on practice with review sessions to consolidate skills
  • Certificate of completion (if successfully).

Applications process

Please note that there are only sixteen places available on each course. These are awarded on a first come first served basis on receipt of completed application form and fee. The closing date is two weeks before course commencement.
