Depression and health behaviours in chronic conditions

Frank Doyle, Psychology. Keywords: cardiovascular disorders, respiratory diseases, population health, depression, behaviour change, adherence.

The prevalence of depression is elevated in those with chronic conditions, and is often associated with poorer prognosis and lower adherence to recommended therapies. For example, in coronary disease and respiratory disease, those with elevated depressive symptoms are less likely to quit smoking, take their prescribed medications or increase their physical activity. The present project will investigate interventions to enhance health behaviours in those who have elevated depressive symptoms.
