The event gathered more than 40 foundation Members of the Chapter as well as Executive Committee Members, RCSI staff involved in MRCS Examinations, senior colleagues from RCSI Bahrain and a number of distinguished guests.

Delegates attended a tour of the Bahrain campus that included a visit to Ibn Al-Baitar Clinical Simulation Centre followed by a formal launch event. The event focussed on recent developments and current challenges in surgical education and speakers included:

  • Major General (Prof) Khalid Al-Khalifa, Consultant General Surgeon and Director of Royal Medical Services, Bahrain Defence Force Hospital
  • Professor Ronan O'Connell, Council Member & Chair of the Court of Examiners, RCSI
  • Professor Martin Corbally, Professor & Chairman, Department of Surgery RCSI Bahrain
  • Professor Oscar Traynor, Professor of Postgraduate Surgical Education, RCSI
  • Mr Paul Nolan, Associate Director & Secretary of the Court of Examiners, RCSI

Speaking on the occasion, the Court's Chair, Professor O'Connell said: "Our Gulf Chapter recognizes the many RCSI graduates  now practicing as surgeons in the Region and those who have undertaken surgical training in Ireland. The challenge for the Chapter is to build on the goodwill and enthusiasm of Court Members, to engage with other RCSI Fellows in the Region and to explore opportunities to support local postgraduate pathways and the International FRCS examination."

Addressing the gathering, Major General (Prof) Khalid Al-Khalifa added: "I wish the university every success with this initiative. I would encourage all of you to become involved with the important work that the Court is doing and to seek out other opportunities to assist with the education and training of healthcare professionals in Bahrain."

All RCSI Fellows in the Gulf region are invited to apply to become MRCS examiners and therefore become members of this Regional Chapter. To do so, interested Fellows should complete the MRCS Examiner application form and return it to examiners@rcsi.ie.
