Collaborative Programmes and Centres
BREAST-PREDICT is the first, Irish Cancer Society-funded Collaborative Cancer Research Centre in Breast Cancer, and brings together researchers UCD, TCD, RCSI, DCU, NUIG and UCC, and the clinical trials group, ICORG. Its mission is to improve the understanding of how breast cancer spreads and becomes resistant to treatment, and develop better therapies.

Funded by the European Commission's Horizon 2020 Marie S. Curie Actions Programme to coordinate a research and training network, MEL-PLEX addresses current needs in academia and the private sector for researchers that have been interdisciplinarily trained, that can navigate confidently between academic, clinical and private sector research environments, and that have developed an innovative and creative mindset to progress research findings towards applications. In collaboration with Technical University Dresden, University of Luxembourg, University of Berne, University of Leuven, University of Heidelberg, University College Dublin, the Danish Cancer Research Center,Oncomark Ltd, Optimata Ltd, ProtATonce Ltd, Merrimack Pharmaceutical Ltd, Apogenix Ltd, Novartis Ltd., Massachusetts General Hospital, Galderma Pharma Ltd, and the Haadssah Hebrew University Medical Center, the scientific objective of MEL-PLEX is to employ molecular, mechanistic and mathematical systems-level disease understanding in order to improve the prognosis and treatment of primary and metastatic melanoma.

The MTCI is a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI)-funded Strategic Research Cluster which aims to discover and develop new anti-cancer drugs. Partners include DCU, UCD, TCD, and ICORG, funded by SFI under the Strategic Research Cluster Scheme.

AMBER - Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research http://ambercentre.ie
Science Foundation Ireland (SFI)-funded AMBER Centre, provides a partnership between leading researchers in material science and industry, bringing together leading international research centres in bioengineering and nanotechnology, the Trinity Centre for Bioengineering (TCBE) and Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices (CRANN) in addition to the Tissue Engineering Research Group based at RCSI, as well as researchers in materials chemistry from UCC. The aim of the centre is to deliver internationally leading materials research that will be industrially and clinically informed with outputs including new discoveries and devices. AMBER has an exceptionally strong emphasis on linking industry to research programmes and its goal is to become an internationally recognised centre of excellence for materials - based in Ireland.

AMCARE is a translational research program to develop advanced multimodal regenerative therapies using cardiopoeitic stem cells and smart biomaterials that effectively treat damage caused by acute myocardial infarction (MI). This project has received funding from the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration.
CÚRAM - Centre for Research in Medical Devices - Galway http://www.curamdevices.ie/
SFI Research Centre CÚRAM, is to radically improve health outcomes for patients by developing innovative implantable medical devices, to respond to the body's environment and to deliver therapeutic agents, such as drugs, exactly where needed. CÚRAM's outputs will particularly benefit patients with chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and musculoskeletal diseases. Devices will be developed with strong clinical collaborations, with industry partners and hospital groups, to enable rapid translation to the clinic.

The EpimiRNA Consortium, involving 16 partners from 8 European countries, the USA and Brazil is funded from the European Union's Framework Programme 7 to investigate molecular mechanisms, diagnostics and treatments for epilepsy.

The mission of the CSM is to undertake translational, multidisciplinary research that identifies proteins and genes implicated in human disease and utilizes systems biology and mathematical approaches in order to develop new prognostic tools for the treatment of cancer, neurological disorders and diabetes, and to develop more targeted therapies for patients.

A multidisciplinary collaboration between RCSI (lead), TCD and Queen's University Belfast. The HRB Centre for Primary Care Research is researching the quality of care across the primary/secondary care interface in vulnerable patient groups and developing information and communication technology (ICT) interventions to improve patient care. COST-Africa is a research project funded under a European Union (EU) FP7 grant. It will design, implement and evaluate a scalable Clinical Officer (CO) surgical training programme in Malawi and Zambia. The result will be proof-of-concept that surgery can be delivered cost-effectively, safely and bring important health benefits to patients attending district hospitals in these two countries.
