Students sign up to RCSI Clubs & Societies as Orientation Week 2013 continues

03 October 2013
On Thursday 3rd October, over 70 clubs & societies held their annual ‘Sign Up Day' at RCSI. Supported by the Student Services Office, Sports Union & Societies Union, the Examination Hall and Basketball Court were transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour and activity. Stalls & booths representing an A-Z of student activities displayed their wares for a fun filled day as part of RCSI's 2013 Fresher's Week.

The Student Services Office sponsored prizes for the Best Dressed Stall. Judges Corriena Brien, Student Services Manager and Sandra Bonetto, Student Services Senior Administrator had a tough job on their hands in selecting the winners. The Irish Society took the first prize with runners up The Climbing Club also making a notable impression. Congratulations to all the students involved in designing the winning stalls.

In addition to the long standing reliables such as Soccer, Rugby, Basketball and Hockey, some of the new sports clubs welcomed in 2013 include Softball, Cycling, Netball, Ultimate Frisbee and Karting. The Tennis Club has also been reinstated and succeeded in attracting plenty of interest.
New societies such as the Multicultural Language Society joined a feast of other long established societies including Surgical Society, Biological Society, Debating and iSoc (Islamic Society). The Surgical Society managed a long queue at their stall for the entire day.

Commenting on the event, Corriena Brien, Student Services Manager said ‘We are delighted with the excellent turnout for Sign Up Day. The damp weather failed to affect high spirits. The purpose of the day is to encourage new student s to participate in student life. In addition to the stalls, presentations were made to all new Foundation and Junior Cycle students at the start of classes today. We hope these and other efforts will encourage new students to get involved in extracurricular activities which are highly valued at RCSI.'

She went on to thank Daniel McManus, Mark Abel and Louise Elliot of Societies Union and Samantha Davis, Conor Keogh and Richard Sweeney of Sports Union, for their tireless efforts in making the day a success. In addition to James O'Hagan from the Student Services team and the dedicated Student Union for all their hard work in making the day a success.
