StAR MD Programme
Background
RCSI is now calling for submissions from interested physician candidates to undertake an MD through the StAR Programme. Over the next 5 years, through StAR, RCSI will recruit approximately 40 new research-intensive academic staff and similar numbers of postgraduate students (PhD & MD) and postdoctoral staff.
The funding of MDs as part of our translational research focus is a key aspect of the StAR Programme. This will strengthen our translational research, build our complement of clinician scientist expertise and greatly benefit the RCSI Hospitals Group with further integration of clinical research in RCSI.
RCSI will fund two-year research positions. Interested candidates should consider submitting a proposal under one of the following RCSI research themes. Candidate research profiles will complement and build upon the following specific StAR research strengths within RCSI.
Programme Structure
The MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree by dissertation is a substantial body of work representing a minimum of two calendar years of research activity and holds a major place among the higher doctorates at level 10 on the National Framework of Qualifications. RCSI is committed to supporting an effective supervisory system for students to ensure that the successful applicants optimise their research and career potential through the programme.
A Principal and Subsidiary Supervisor (Co-Supervisor) will be nominated by the applicant at application stage.
Requirements
Applicants should liaise with potential supervisors (ideally one clinical and one scientific) to have agreed the focus of, and in broad outline the nature of, the research they wish to carry out.
These MD places will be competitive. It is expected that interested applicants will have:
- previously undertaken research or audit projects at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level,
- presented at national or other meetings,
- publications confirming the quality of this activity.
Shortlisting of applicants will be undertaken by the panel of assessors. All shortlisted candidates will be interviewed.
