Applicants will be selected for admission on the basis of open competition using the following criteria:

Application Process

  • Applications must be made online directly to RCSI through the College website from 1st November 2017 to 1st March 2018. Although late applications may be accepted until 01st of March, seats within the programme are very competitive and early application is advised.
  • There is a 75 euro application fee payable by credit card.
  • The following documents are required for selection and should be uploaded as part of the online application process:
    1. Certified copies of academic transcripts including English language transcripts (IELTS) if applicable
    2. Non-academic references
    3. Copy of passport showing name, nationality and date of birth
    4. A passport style photograph
  • Applicants are required to nominate an Academic Referee as part of the application process. The Admission Office will then contact the referee and request that they provide a ‘Confidential Academic Reference’. The full name, title, position and contact details of the referee is required as part of the online application. It is advisable therefore to inform the referee and seek his/her permission to nominate them as a referee. Please note that the contact details of the referee are required as part of the application and it is advisable to have these details available prior to commencing the application process


Selection process
Applications are reviewed by members of the Admissions Committee and applicants will be selected for admission on the basis of open competition using the following criteria:

  • Academic Eligibility, and
  • English language eligibility, and
  • Confidential references, a personal statement and life experience (work life balance, extracurricular activities, relevant work/ voluntary experience).
Competitive applicants are then selected from within the overall application pool and the most competitive cohort is offered the opportunity to undertake an online interview. The interview normally takes place in March.

Course Overview

A qualification in Pharmacy enables a rich and rewarding career that can be pursued in a variety of distinct settings, both nationally and internationally. RCSI are pioneers in pharmacy education, offering the most progressive and modern programme in a reputable and globally respected institution whose sole mission is to "educate, nurture and discover for the benefit of human health".
There is a strong emphasis on clinical practice and clinical competence from the beginning of the programme.

Students from years 1 to 3 of the programme have introductory pharmacy practice experiences. This takes the form of:

  • Early patient contact
  • Out of hours pharmacy visits
  • Shadowing a pharmacist
  • Case discussions facilitated by pharmacists
  • Clinical data interpretation and
  • Attendance at hospital grand rounds by video conference link

Students have the option of undertaking a 2 month clinical or non-clinical placement over the summer months prior to the start of their fourth year. In their fourth year, students undertake 4 months of a structured professional placement in either a clinical or non-clinical setting. In their fifth year, students undertake 8 months of clinical training under the supervision of an RCSI tutor. This ensures that students have the opportunity to apply, in a supervised clinical setting, all of the knowledge and skills acquired over the 5 years at the RCSI School of Pharmacy.

RCSI Pharmacy graduates are confident and capable of meeting the medication related needs of both patients and populations. They are prepared to fulfil their professional responsibilities via clinical practice or to enter into doctoral studies for advanced practice or in the field of pharmaceutical sciences.


Highlights of the MPharm

  • Small, culturally diverse classes - MPharm classes will contain approximately 70 students per year of which 30% will be international students. This diversity offers a unique global perspective and is reflective of the patient populations graduates will ultimately seek to serve.

  • Integrated taught and experiential curriculum - The MPharm degree is delivered over five years, with two semesters per year. Each semester is divided into modules, and the curriculum is delivered using an integrated systems-based teaching approach. The teaching is, supported by student placements in the hospital, community or industrial pharmacy settings. This fully integrated teaching approach enables students to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom and while on professional practice placements to ensure that the student is fully prepared to deliver optimal patient care after graduation.

  • Focus on learning outcomes - Upon entry to the programme students are first introduced to core scientific and professional principles. As their educational journey through the MPharm programme progresses, the student’s curriculum focuses on successive learning outcomes to produce a competent, reflective and patient focused pharmacist, ready for pharmacy practice in all professional domains.

  • Focus on professional development - RCSI’s MPharm programme will produce graduates who are committed to lifelong learning which is a requirement for the effective and safe provision of pharmacist delivered patient care.

  • Bed-side teaching – The Clinical pharmacy faculty within the RCSI Hospital’s Group and at clinical partner sites provides structured bed-side teaching to support and drive attainment of learning outcomes.

  • International electives - Students have the opportunity to travel to the University of Lorraine (France) through the Erasmus programme or to apply to participate in a range of international electives including the USA and China.

  • Practice makes perfect - The programme includes experiential learning opportunities, for example, internships which allow students to practice professional skills under the guidance of an experienced pharmacy practitioner, within the community, the hospital or the industrial pharmacy settings.
  • Career focus - Upon successful completion of the MPharm programme, graduates can register with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland and enter professional pharmacy practice as very well equipped pharmacists, ready to respond effectively to the opportunities and challenges modern healthcare delivery brings.




    What You Will Study

    Professional and practical studies form part of the curriculum from the start and the programme produces graduates capable of undertaking a career in any of the specialties of pharmacy. To provide this, the programme combines the practice of pharmacy with teaching in basic and pharmaceutical sciences to produce a well-rounded professional. The course is structured such that the student progresses from foundation studies, through scientific and professional studies to preparation for practice.

    The academic content is delivered in modules, which are based on the systems of the human body and each module integrates the life-sciences, clinical sciences and practice associated with that system and is defined by a series of learning outcomes.

    Structured experiential learning opportunities are integrated throughout the programme. These include, a 4-month structured professional placement in the fourth year, 1 or 2-month placement option over the summer months between third and fourth year and an 8-month professional placement in the final fifth year.


    Year One
    An introduction to the pharmacist as a Professional and the many roles of the pharmacist is central to the first year of the programme which provides students with a solid grounding in the fields of pharmaceutical sciences and chemistry. The course is delivered as a series of stand-alone and integrated modules with modularised assessment and is structured as follows:

    Entry Requirements

    The School of Pharmacy receives applications from Non EU students who have studied in many different countries and undertaken many different high school systems. The list below shows the most frequent academic programmes with which International students apply for the course. If your educational programme is not covered on this list, please email the Admissions Office directly for further information.


    GCE A -Levels

    Applicants must present a minimum of three A-levels with minimum grades of ABB to include Chemistry and one of the following: Mathematics, Biology or Physics.
    All applicants must also have completed a minimum of six subjects at GCSE level, which must include a minimum Grade C in English and Mathematics.


    IB Diploma

    Applicants must present a minimum score of 35 IB Diploma points (inclusive of bonus points). The Diploma must comprise a minimum of six subjects (three subjects at Higher Level and three subjects at Standard Level), which must include Chemistry at Higher Level (with a minimum score of 5) and another laboratory science subject (Biology or Physics) or Mathematics at Higher Level.
    If Mathematics is presented with Chemistry at Higher Level, another laboratory science subject (Biology or Physics) must also be presented at Standard Level.


    Note: Candidates are required to undertake all 6 IB examinations in one examination session.



    ATAR/TER required: minimum 85%
    Applicants presenting the Australian matriculation examination must include Chemistry and Mathematics plus one other science subject (all at stage 3)
    For 2018 entry, this equates to a minimum cumulative TEA score of 261



    Applicants must have completed their high school examinations with a minimum average score of 85% and competitive grades in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics in Grade 12.

    Candidates applying with IB Diploma or AP examinations are also eligible for consideration.


    Hong Kong

    HKDSE at 5,5,5 in three elective subjects (which must include Chemistry). Integrated or Combined sciences are not accepted. In addition, candidates must achieve at least 4,4,4,4 in the four core subjects.



    Applicants must have completed the Science stream at standard XII and hold a bone-fide certificate of completion issued by the CBSE or ISCE.
    Candidates must achieve an average of 85% or above to be considered for the programme.



    S.T.P.M. minimum grades of A,B+,B+ to include Chemistry and one of the following; Mathematics, Biology or Physics.
    Applicants presenting the Malaysian University Matriculation Exam must achieve a GPA of 3.5 in one sitting and have competitive grades in Mathematics, Physics, Biology and English.
    Grades obtained in more than one sitting will be considered provided that the proximity of the examinations is in less than one year.
    Only grades of A, B or C (1-6) are considered to be of a pass standard.



    Unified Examination Certificate (UEC)

    Candidates must present a minimum score of B4 in five subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Additional Mathematics)



    SABIS – Choueifat international Schools

    Choueifat International School graduates are eligible for consideration for RCSI’s undergraduate Pharmacy programme depending on their combination of subjects/education systems presented at the time of application. Candidates must present either A2-level Chemistry with a minimum of grade A, or Advanced Placement Chemistry with a minimum score of 4, or IB Chemistry at Higher Level with a minimum score of 5. In addition, they must present one additional subject from the group Mathematics, Biology or Physics with minimum grades of B at A2-level, 4 at Advanced Placement, or 5 in the International Baccalaureate.


    South Korea

    Applicants must have completed the Natural Science stream to Year 12 and achieve competitive grades in their final year high school examinations.

    Applicants must also achieve a minimum overall score of 90% in the College Scholastic Aptitude Test, including a minimum score of 80% in the Science examinations.


    United States

    Applicants presenting the American High School Diploma must achieve a minimum GPA of 3.5 on the 4.0 scale including competitive marks in Chemistry and either Biology, Physics or Maths in Grade 12 of the American High School Diploma. Candidates applying with IB should refer to the IB entry requirements.

    SAT or ACT scores are not a requirement for admissions but can be provided if available.

    RCSI recognises the American High School Diploma Programme delivered by a number of international schools located outside of the USA. Please visit this website for a list of recognised schools. If your school is not listed, email the Admissions Office for more information.


    Middle East and Gulf Countries

    Students who graduate from government/public and bilingual high school programmes that are delivered throughout the Middle East cannot apply for direct entry to RCSI.
    Such students must complete a recognised pre-university/foundation programme (see sample list below) prior to applying to RCSI. Applicants who have undertaken A-level or IB may be eligible for direct entry to RCSI’s undergraduate pharmacy programme and should refer to the relevant sections above.


    Pre-university/Foundation Programmes

    Students who graduate from high school systems that do not meet the National University of Ireland regulations for direct entry to the undergraduate programmes offered in RCSI may undertake a recognised pre-university/foundation programme and apply to RCSI on the basis of the results obtained in their selected programme. RCSI does not make recommendations or have any preferred providers from the programmes listed below.


    Irish Leaving Certificate

    Non EU Applicants must present a minimum of 6 subjects [2 x H4 and 4 x O6/H7] to include Chemistry and either Physics or Biology at H4 and a minimum of an O6/H7 in 4 other subjects to include English, Maths and one foreign language. In addition to meeting these subject requirements, applicants must also achieve a minimum of 500 points in the same sitting of the Irish Leaving Certificate examination.


    INTO St Georges University of London Foundation Programme in Medical, Biomedical and Healthcare Sciences

    Minimum overall score of 72% including a minimum of 68% in Academic English, a minimum of 65% in Chemistry and no individual module score less than 60%.


    Bellerbys College Foundation Programme

    Overall average score of 70% across the academic modules including a minimum score of 70% in Chemistry and no less than 55% in any individual module.


    Dublin International Foundation College (DIFC)

    Minimum grades AAAB in English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry on the Sciences Foundation Programme.


    Liverpool International Foundation Programme

    Overall average score of 70% across all modules and no less than 65% in any individual module.


    UCLAN Medicine Undergraduate Foundation Programme

    Overall average score of 70% across all academic modules including a minimum average score of 70% in MUFP Chemistry for Medics and no less than 60% in any individual module. Achievement of an overall equivalent IELTS score of 6.5 with no skill less than 6.0 in the English language module is also required.


    University of St Andrew's International Foundation Porgramme

    Minimum overall score of 15 with no less than 16 in Inorganic & Physical Chemistry and Organic & Biological Chemistry 1 plus achievement of an overall IELTS of 6.5 with no skill less than 6.0 in the English language modules.


    Other foundation programmes not listed above may be considered. Enquiries should be emailed to the Admissions Office.


    Scottish Highers

    Applicants must have completed the Scottish Higher Examinations with minimum grades of AAABB, which must include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English.


    English Language Requirements

    Teaching in RCSI is through the medium of English; therefore, all applicants are required to demonstrate a high level of competence in the English language.

    Applicants (whose first language is not English) must either meet the minimum English language matriculation requirement as outlined above or separately in the IELTS examination (academic stream) with an overall average score of 6.5 with no individual section lower than 6.0.

    Note: All IELTS test results must be less than 2 years old at the time of admission.




    Course Fees



    • Non-EU fees for the academic year 2018/19 are €25,000.
    • Please note that RCSI offers academic scholarships worth €7,000 per annum to privately funded students, reducing the overall tuition fee to €18,000 per annum.
    • An additional one off payment on first year fee of €135 applies for registration with the National University of Ireland (NUI).

    1. What do I do if I am experiencing difficulties with my RCSI online application?

      Please ensure that you are not applying before or after the application period (1st November - 1st March or 1st July – 15th November (late applications accepted until 15th January) if an Atlantic Bridge applicant). If you are experiencing difficulties please email the Admissions Office and indicate what the difficulty is.
    2. Can I have the application form sent to me by post?

      No, all applicants applying directly to RCSI (Non EU applicants from outside North America) must complete the RCSI online application.
    3. Are students guaranteed housing?

      Mercer Court Accommodation is located immediately adjacent to the College and is reserved for new incoming students. Capacity is limited and places are offered to students on a first come first served basis. The Student Services Department maintains a Registry of Accommodation and assists students in finding suitable accommodation. Details in relation to accommodation are available in the Student Life section of the website.
