Department of Paediatrics

The RCSI Department of Paediatrics is committed to pursuing excellent undergraduate education in Paediatrics for RCSI students in all the clinical sites. The Senior Cycle Paediatric educational programme has a significant emphasis on bedside teaching, core topics in Paediatrics, problem-based learning and active student participation in topic and clinical presentations.

Senior Cycle
In the first year of the senior cycle (other known as SC1) students are attached on a rotational basis for 7 weeks to General Practice, Medicine and Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Psychiatry and Paediatrics. All students have an end-of-course clinical assessment in both Paediatrics and Neonatology. For further information on Medicine Cycles please refer to this webpage. 

  

 

Learning outcomes
During the 7 week Paediatrics rotation in Senior Cycle 1 students will:

  • learn the principles and practice of caring for children
  • become skilled in taking a paediatric history 
  • learn the art of performing a paediatric physical exam 
  • understand normal paediatric growth and development
  • learn to recognise, evaluate and manage common paediatric medical problems

 


The Paediatric rotation takes place over the following training sites:

  • Children's University Hospital, Temple Street, Dublin 1 
  • Our Lady's Children's Hospital Crumlin, Dublin 12 
  • Rotunda Hospital, Dublin 1 
  • Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar, Co. Westmeath 
  • St. Luke's General Hospital Carlow/Kilkenny, Co. Kilkenny 
  • University Hospital Waterford, Co. Waterford 
  • Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, Co. Louth 
  • Cavan General Hospital, Co. Cavan 
  • South West Acute Hospital, Enniskillen
RCSI also has Paediatric sites in Perdana and Bahrain, which  follow the same curriculum as the Ireland based Paediatric sites. Professor Kevin Dunne is the Professor of Paediatrics and the Head of Paediatrics in RCSI Bahrain.
