Department of Psychiatry
The Department of Psychiatry operates from the RCSI Education and Research Centre, Beaumont Hospital under the direction of Professor Kieran Murphy who has headed the Department since January 2002.
Undergraduate
We provide teaching at undergraduate level for medical students within RCSI and for elective students from other medical schools. In addition to clinical attachments at Beaumont Hospital, students also attend Connolly Hospital (Blanchardstown), North Dublin Mental Health Services, St Vincent's Hospital (Fairview), Cavan General Hospital, Newcastle Hospital (Greystones)/St Pat's (St Edmundsbury Hospital (Lucan), Dept of Psychiatry, Louth Meath MHS (Drogheda/Ardee), Highfield Healthcare, St Luke's Hospital (Kilkenny), Cluain Mhuire Family Centre (Blackrock) and University Hospital Waterford.
Curriculum delivery involves an on-line video lecture and interactive tutorial programme, small-group tutorials, case-based teaching and clinical skills tutorials.
Postgraduate and research
The Department provides postgraduate training for Basic and Higher Specialist Training in Psychiatry through the RCSI Rotational Training Scheme in Psychiatry. We have a strong research ethos with emphasis on both basic science and clinical research.
Psychiatry research themes
Specific research themes include:
- Behavioural phenotypes in genetics disorders
- Cellular cytoarchitectural and protein signature of major psychiatric disorder
- Developmental epidemiology of psychosis
- Neurobiology of autistic spectrum disorders
- Deliberate self harm
- The neurobiology of epilepsy and non-epileptic sequences.
