RCSI research in Health Professions Education (HPE) is informed by educational needs in different health settings (e.g. clinical and academic, national and international, inter-professional) and seeks to develop new educational methodologies and approaches that can be translated into more advanced health professions education practices.

Educational research themes which we prioritise are:

  • professional consultation skills,
  • professionalism,
  • technology enhanced learning,
  • student teaching and learning,
  • educational transitions,

in the context of the RCSI family of schools and global sites : there are opportunities to explore Inter-professional education (IPE) and transnational aspects of education. 

We are also part of the Best Evidence Medical Education (BEME) Collaboration which is an international group of individuals, universities and professional organisations committed to the development of evidence informed education in the medical and health professions.  The Health Professions Education Centre has been elected to be an International Collaborating Centre (BICC) and is active in the field of systematic reviews.

We have national collaborations with 3U partners (DCU and NUIM in the areas of professionalism, peer observation of teaching and TEL) and international research collaborations with the University of Maastricht, Antwerp, McGill, Malmo (in the areas of communication and consultation skills, career choices, and patient enablement and consultation quality).
