Academic Department of Surgery

The Department of Surgery provides clinical care across a wide variety of specialties to the population of North Dublin through the campus in Beaumont Hospital.

RCSI Beaumont HospitalWe provide a tertiary referral service vascular, thoracic and hepatobiliary surgery. In addition, the National Neurosurgical Centre and the National Pancreas and Renal Transplant Programme are accommodated within the unit in Beaumont Hospital.

We provide teaching at undergraduate level to medical students within the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. In addition to the clinical facilities in Beaumont Hospital, we send students to James Connolly Memorial Hospital (Blanchardstown), Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital (Drogheda), Cavan General Hospital, Mullingar General Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital (Kilkenny) and Waterford Regional Hospital.

At postgraduate level, this department provides recognised training at Basic and Higher Surgical levels for aspiring surgeons from Ireland and Overseas. We organise and administer formal examinations including the (traditional) Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the newer Associate Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

We have an active research laboratory which has widely published in international journals. Our research interests include Cell Cycle Regulation of Breast Cancer Cells and Steroid Receptor transcriptional regulation.
