Learn more about Undergraduate Medicine at RCSI

RCSI is Ireland’s largest medical school and one of the most international medical schools in the world. Graduates leave RCSI with a highly regarded, internationally recognised medical degree, enabling them to practice in almost any country throughout the world.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings (2016-17) places RCSI in the top 250 institutions worldwide and joint first place in the Republic of Ireland.

RCSI prides itself on producing medical graduates that are not only knowledgeable in the science of medicine but are also exceptionally well trained clinicians with advanced clinical skills. To achieve this, our students are provided with a modern curriculum, where advanced clinical skills are developed throughout the programme, culminating in our unique sub internship programme which is offered in final year and prepares students for the early stages of their junior doctor experience. RCSI has over 200 clinical consultants (senior physicians) on our teaching staff, enabling our students to receive consultant delivered clinical teaching in small groups which is based on individual clinical cases in some of Ireland’s finest hospitals.

To further ensure that RCSI medical students continue to graduate with exceptional clinical skills, the College is investing €80 million in a new Academic and Education Building which will be located at our city centre campus on St Stephen’s Green in Dublin. Due for completion in autumn 2017, the facility will provide unparalleled medical teaching facilities including the largest dedicated clinical simulation facilities in Europe.

From the early 1960s, international students have been studying alongside Irish students and this blend of Irish and international students forms the basis on which RCSI’s reputation as an international College is built. Today, approximately one third of our medical students are Irish and two thirds are international. This not only creates a unique environment in which to study medicine, it also creates a community of RCSI graduates who are practising in over 70 countries and in some of the most senior medical positions in the World. Our global network of over 15,500 alumni welcomes RCSI students into their clinical practices during the summer months and other designated elective periods. This extensive Alumni network is now a priceless resource for undergraduate students as it provides unparalleled access to international medical electives, which adds to the richness of the medical training provided by the College.
