Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Coláiste Ríoga na Máinleá in Éirinn


Fellowship or Membership of RCSI is usually by examination, which is held throughout the Ireland and at various locations internationally.

RCSI has different membership categories for surgeons at different stages of their career. Below is a brief description of each category:


To become a Member of RCSI (MRCSI) you need to either:

  • Pass the intercollegiate membership exam in Ireland; or 
  • Pass the collegiate membership examination run by RCSI in several destinations overseas


To become a Fellow of RCSI (FRCSI) you need to:

  • Pass an intercollegiate specialty exam

Success in any of the above examinations means you are eligible for election to Membership or Fellowship of the College. You will be sent the relevant paperwork for completion and invited to attend the next appropriate conferring ceremony.
