Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Coláiste Ríoga na Máinleá in Éirinn

MRCS Examination

The central aim of the MRCS exam is to assess trainee surgeons in the breadth of both basic sciences and the principles of surgery.

This examination is an intercollegiate one. Hence, the examination syllabus, format and content are common to all surgical Royal Colleges in the UK and Ireland. The MRCS is fully recognised by both the Irish Medical Council and the General Medical Council (UK).

The MRCS Part A takes place three times a year, in January, April, and September. RCSI offers this exam in 12 centres: Dublin, Belfast, Malta, Dammam, Amman, Bahrain, Kochi, Chennai, Lucknow, Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, and Penang.

The MRCS Part B is held three times per year in Dublin (February, May, and October); twice per year in Bahrain (March and November); and twice per year in Penang (January and August). Additionally, RCSI has recently started holding the exam in Dubai once a year (June).

Applications for MRCS examinations are open.

The course covers the core content of the exam and is designed to assist the candidates in their exam preparation and to improve their examination technique. It has mock OSCEs, interactive workshops, and group discussions in the areas of: applied surgery/critical care, clinical/procedural skills, anatomy/surgical pathology, and communications.

This course is run three times a year in Ireland and once or twice a year in Bahrain and Penang. The next dates of this course will take place in the following locations:
